Beer It Forward Update - Package #1 Lands and Brings Casualty #1

Hey folks just wanted to give those of you following the Beer It Forward a brief update. The first package has landed at Target #1, Robert from Charleston, SC. Unfortunately, we had a casualty in shipment and a bottle of Southern Tier Choklat was lost. These things happen, but at least it's a reminder that good packing is necessary. Although I think I probably packed the box with just a bit too much beer (or maybe we just had a disgruntled FedEx employee somewhere along the line), I avoided having FedEx return the package to me because the beer was kept from leaking through the box by the double trash bags holding all of the beer. Huzzah!

Now Robert's going to select someone else from our participant list and send them a box of beer, and then they will do the same and so on. Remember, you don't want to let your target know that they're next, we want it to be a surprise!

Here's what I sent to Robert (L to R):

1 x 16oz. Sixpoint Righteous Rye
1 x 16oz. Sixpoint Bengali Tiger
1 x 12oz. Sixpoint Resin
1 x 12oz. Weyerbacher Insanity
1 x 12oz. Ithaca Flower Power
1 x 12oz. Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
1 x 12oz. 2009 Brooklyn Monster Ale
1 x 12oz. Weyerbacher Old Heathen Imp. Stout
1 x 12oz. Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA

and of course the ill-fated 22oz. Southern Tier Choklat.

Beer It Forward Participant List

So I've gone through and selected the participants for our first ever Beer It Forward and I think this is going to be a blast. Apologies to those that I did not include, but as expected we were a bit heavy on the East Coast representation so I had to randomly select some people to trim it down. Originally I was going to only pick 8 people for this, but I'm going with 12 instead since I got a nice response.

If you need a review of the rules, check out my original post. Here are our participants:

East
(me) John Kleinchester - Jersey City, NJ
Stephen L. - Bellmawr, NJ
James S. - Portland, ME
Marek K. - Riverdale, NJ

Central
Eric S. - Detroit, MI
Billy E. - Springfield, MO
Joe L. - Northern Kentucky / Cincinnati, OH

South
Robert D. - Charleston, SC
Win B. - Raleigh, NC
Brian M. - Ashburn, VA
Joel M. - Asheboro, NC
Johnny S. - Austin, TX

West
Mike B. - San Diego, CA

You'll all be receiving an email with an invite to a google document that will be used for tracking who's received a box. Email me at beertography@gmail.com with your mailing addresses and let's get this train goin!

Cheers!

Beertography Beer It Forward Open Signups

The results of a Beer It Forward I participated in last year.

Do you want to get awesome beer in the mail? The answer is yes, so let's not waste any more time.

What is a Beer It Forward? It's very simple. You sign up and get selected, you get beer shipped to you. Then, you take beer from your local region and send it to another person in the selected participants. It's that easy. So how about some details?

  • This is the first one I'm organizing, so I'm going to keep it simple. We're going to try to have 8 participants from different parts of the US. No international people just yet, sorry. Maybe we can let them in next time if this goes well.
  • In order to apply for the BIF, send me an email with the subject line "BIF" along with your city/state. Where I get multiple applicants from the same region, I'll randomly select one to be involved. The goal is to spread out the participants as much as possible so everyone gets beer they can't get in their locale.
  • We'll do a 60 ounce limit. That means: please send at the very least six 12oz bottles of different varieties. Anything more than that is a nice bonus, but not required. If you want, you can throw in extras like a t-shirt, glassware, coasters, etc. as well.
  • I'll randomly select someone from the group that I will ship to first. That person then gets the list of the remaining participants and picks the next person as their target. Other than me, no one knows who is sending them beer. Part of the fun is the surprise of opening the box.
  • Once you receive your package, please send yours out within 7 days time to keep things moving.
  • For those of you that have never shipped before, here's a great list of helpful tips you can check out. I don't usually do the ziplock bag thing, instead I'll take two trash bags and put all of the bubble-wrapped beers into the trash bags, tying it tightly. Better to be overly safe than sorry.
  • If your beer shipment gets lost or damaged, it's on you to replace it and send it to the person who was supposed to receive it.
  • If you're not sure what beer from your region that your target can't get, consult this handy-dandy google document. Or contact me and I'll try to help you out.

So, let's review. You want in, right? Send me an email with the subject line "BIF" along with your city/state. I'll sort through everyone who wants to be involved and break it down by region. Then I'll notify the selected participants and get this thing started. I'll keep accepting entries until next Monday 2/6.

Beer in My Inbox

A few weeks ago, right in the midst of my move from Brooklyn to Jersey City, I participated in another "Beer It Forward" with some fellow beer enthusiasts. The best part about the BIF in comparison with a straight trade is the surprise. You send beer off to someone, but they're not the one who sends beer to you. And in most cases, you don't know who you're receiving from OR what you'll get until the day the box arrives. For reference, here's a post regarding the last one I participated in.

As you can see above, the box I got was pretty awesome. I've never had the La Folie before, which I've been hearing about forever. Then you've got two excellent Russian River brews that you can't get here in NY/NJ. THEN there's the beers from Deschutes (which I'll be visiting in Oregon next month) capped off with Port, Ska and Oskar Blues beers. It was a great package.

I've already had the Ten FIDY, Gordon, Hop Hendge and Red Chair, but have been holding out on everything else. At LEAST one of those bottles is disappearing this weekend.

Cheers!
