Bomb Lager

Today's photo was submitted by Mike Raymond, founder of Bomb Beer Company. Bomb Lager is a traditional Bavarian Helles brewed with "some of the best malts around. No adjunct. No surprises. Just quality ingredients from quality suppliers." I first became aware of Bomb Lager at the Village Voice's Brooklyn Pour festival, but unfortunately I didn't get to actually give it a try.

In the photo you see their awesomely designed cans accompanied by a hand painted skatedeck that they had our their artist do for them. Also check out their Facebook page where they actually ended up giving the board away! Very cool. I hope to give them a try soon.

Sebago Slick Nick Winter Ale

Today's photo was submitted by @momsmaltbarley and features Sebago Brewing Company's Slick Nick Winter Ale. Unfortunately I've never had a beer from Sebago but they seem to have some pretty interesting stuff. I'll be spending all of next week in Southern New Hampshire, maybe I can find some there? I'm not entirely sure of their distribution. Anyone know?

Dogfish Head 60 and 120 Minute IPA

Today's photo was submitted by @Brian_Mcq and features the tap handle of Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA. Brian visited the brewery in Milton, Delaware this past weekend and the above was his favorite photo.

Brian also tweeted this side-by-side photo of 2008 120 Minute (left) and 2011 120 Minute (right) and thought the 2011 was better. I was surprised at the big difference in color. Very interesting. I have a bottle or two of 2008 120 at home, maybe it's time to open one up? Cheers and thanks for the photos Brian!

Sixpoint Righteous Ale

Anyone out there follow the NHL? Who's your team? Loyal reader Jared Walkowitz submitted this photo of himself enjoying a Sixpoint Righteous Ale while watching the New Jersey Devils on TV and wearing his Devils t-shirt. I happen to be a Devils fan as well, and with a recent hot streak and a big game against the New York Rangers tonight, I figured today would be a good day to post this submission. Unfortunately the last time I posted a sports-related beertography, it jinxed the team and they lost. Hopefully this doesn't continue the streak. Unless you hate the Devils, then you're rooting for my jinxing. Let's see some beertography of YOUR favorite team along with some good beer!

Surly Wet

Today's photo was submitted by Heather aka @hopheadheath and features the wonderful and rare (if you're not from around Minnesota) beer Surly Wet. This beer is brewed with 4800 lbs. of hops picked fresh in Washington and used 3 days later in MN. As you can tell, Heather was clever in her use of backdrop for this beer. You gotta love fresh hop beers.

Heather is also a reporter for our friends over at newjerseycraftbeer.com. If you live in NJ (or visit frequently) head over and pick yourself up a Membership Card to get great discounts at bars all across NJ.

Hawthorn Premium Pale Ale

Today's photo was submitted by the guys over at Back of the Ferry. As you can probably tell from the photo, Back of the Ferry is a Sydney based beer blog. I'm fascinated by the craft beer revolutions going on in other parts of the globe, so their blog is a real interesting read. Plus they take some great photos. The beer in this photo is Hawthorn Premium Pale Ale out of Melbourne and it was voted into the Top Ten of Australian Craft Beer last year. BOTF says the beer is "It is as face-slappingly refreshing" and it "has wonderful citrus laced bitterness". Sounds good. Who wants to go to Australia with me?

You can also follow Back of the Ferry on twitter.

Barcade Crawl

This past Saturday, some friends and I decided to do something a little crazy. Go to all three Barcade locations (Philadelphia, Jersey City and Brooklyn) in one day. This all came about after I visited Barcade Philly for the first time a few weeks ago and realized it wouldn't be very hard to go to both the Philly and Jersey City locations in one afternoon. After describing my trip and my thought to one Chris O' Leary of Brew York, New York, the gears in his head were immediately turning. A few days later and Chris had already set up a Facebook Event and planned out a whole route entirely utilizing mass transit. Uh oh, we were really doing this.

Chris already has a great recap on his site, so I won't go into it here. But we made it to Jersey City just after 5:00 and Brooklyn at around 9:00. Not too bad really. Obviously Philly was the long haul, but still worth it as it's a great venue. Here are a few photos to add to the mix:

They have a smoker. This means already amazing food is actually smoked amazing food.

If you like this idea but don't feel like taking mass transit, you're in luck. This Saturday 12/10, Barcade and Sixpoint are joining forces for a Barcade Crawl by BUS! A $100 ticket gets you transportation round trip from Brooklyn to all 3 Barcades, 5 oz. pours of all 10 exclusive Sixpoint beers at each location AND food in Philly. That's a pretty great deal AND all proceeds are going to charity. Do it!

Sierra Nevada Porter

Today's photo was submitted by Matt Robinson and features Sierra Nevada's year-round Porter. Yes, I realize that this is two Sierra Nevadas in a row but today I've decided to feature this photo because of Matt's awesome mug. I'm not sure how many of you follow soccer, but Manchester United is my favorite team in the English Premier League and they just so happen to be playing in a Champions League matchup this afternoon. OH, and the Sierra Nevada Porter is real good too. Matt took this photo while watching this past weekend's game where Man U beat Aston Villa 1-0.

Troegs Mad Elf

Today's photo was submitted by Matthew Trogner who just so happens to be the Marketing Coordinator for Troegs Brewing Company. Who could possibly say no to almost 1 full gallon of Troegs Mad Elf, their holiday ale brewed with honey and cherries? No one, that's who.

Lagunitas Sucks

Today's photo, submitted by Jon-Claude Dalimonte proves that Lagunitas Sucks. Huh? Oh it's the name of their new Holiday Ale! They didn't have the brewing capacity to release their usual Brown Shugga' so they decide to beat beer geeks to the punch and claim they suck. Fortunately for them, it's good! Here's what the brewery had to say about it:
It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga‘ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it all to be over…..

Victory Prima Pils

Today's entry is in honor of Victory Beer Night at Barcade Jersey City tonight which I'll be attending (as will a certain co-founder named Bill Covalesky). This beertography comes from the awesome beer blog It's Just The Booze Dancing and features Victory Prima Pils. While I'm excited to have some great Victory beers on tap tonight, this only reminds me that it is a sin that I have yet to visit Victory in Downingtown, PA. This must be remedied sooner than later, as Victory makes some great beers.

Make sure you visit Booze Dancing and check out their excellent beertography and beer reviews.

Brooklyn Brewery Monster Ale

Even though our Brooklyn Brewery Beertography Contest has come and gone, I got so many great entries that I wanted to share a few. Today's is from Rodney McPhail and features the 2010 Brooklyn Brewery Monster Ale. The 2011 version of Monster should just be hitting stores now so be on the look out and pick up a whole case or nine to cellar for future drinking. Thanks to Rodney for the great submission.

Avery Out of Bounds Stout

Today's entry is from Sean Buchan aka beertographer and features Avery Out of Bounds Stout. Sean is an amazing photographer and obviously a big craft beer fan in Denver. Sean is a regular contributor to Denver Off the Wagon where he is currently featured as the man behind the Beer Porn of the Week.

Sierra Nevada Celebration

Today's entry is from Shawn aka Take Another Swig and features Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. For those that don't already know, Celebration is Sierra Nevada's annual holiday seasonal that instead of going the spice route, goes for a nice fresh hop character that's quite refreshing. Shawn was at the Meadowlands in New Jersey celebrating (see what I did there?) a New York Jets win against the Buffalo Bills.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Hopefully right now you're waking up to a house that's already smelling of delicious foods. Today I wanted to share with you my craft beer pairings with my '09 Thanksgiving meal that I really enjoyed. Above you'll see that I paired my main course of turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, turnip, stuffing, green beans, sweet potatoes and corn with the wonderful Allagash Grand Cru. This year I'll be trying it with Allagash Tripel. Something about Allagash just always gets me on Thanksgiving.

For dessert I went with Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti. This was GOOD, but at the time I wished I had not gone the oaked route. A regular Yeti or even a Belgian Yeti would have hit the spot even more. This year I haven't quite decided what I'll be pairing it with, but the 2009 Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout that's sitting in the fridge is calling my name.

Reminder! If you would like to have your photos featured on the site, please email them to beertography@gmail.com. Or if you're on the go, you can tag your tweet with #beertography and/or mention me @beertography.

Samuel Smith Imperial Stout

Today's photo comes to us from Jym Doolan aka The BrewThusiast. Jym checked this beer into Untappd and then exclaimed, "Wonderful Example of Imperial Stout! Man I love this #beer!" and I have to concur. Sam Smith is pretty easy to find here in NYC, and it's always a go-to when you want something quality. Brooklyn Brewery Beertography Contest Winner

Congratulations to the winner of our Brooklyn Brewery Beertography Contest Robert Rizzolo! His awesome photo of a Pumpkin salivating over Brooklyn Oktoberfest got over 200 Likes on Facebook.

That wraps up this contest but fear not, we will be having more in the future. Cheers!

Hill Farmstead/Cigar City Nor Double IPA

Hey folks, we're back and kicking it off with a great photo. This one comes to us courtesy of Shawn of Take Another Swig. Shawn just visited Hill Farmstead in VT and it sounds like he had an amazing time... and drank some amazing beers of course. Check out our visit up there this past Summer. Shawn was also the runner up in our Brooklyn Brewery Beertography Contest where his awesome shot of his cat complete with vampire cape was very popular. Cheers and thanks to Shawn!

Organic Beer

About 2 years ago, I did something that changed the way I ate. I saw the film Food, Inc. based on the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. I had a strange feeling going into the theatre that it would change the way I live, just as seeing Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me in 2004 stopped me from ever eating fast food again. And I was right. Ever since seeing Food, Inc., I’ve attempted to make my diet 100% organic. It’s a near impossible task so I do the best I can, but it never really translated to my beer purchasing habits.

It’s somewhat inherent in the world of microbreweries to have a concerned focus on local, high-quality ingredients and environmental impact. Many breweries employ wind power or other green technologies within their breweries. Sierra Nevada recently created its first-ever fully sustainable brew Estate, which was made entirely with certified-organic ingredients grown at their facility in California.

But the craft beer world as a whole has yet to fully embrace the idea of organic beer. That’s not to say that there aren’t a few great breweries that pride themselves on their all-organic beers. Prime examples being Wolaver’s out of Middlebury,VT and Hopworks Urban Brewery from Portland, OR. Other examples include Bison Brewing, Pigsah, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing and Peak Organic.

The question remains, why organic? It seems most obvious to me that it’s important to buy meat that has been treated properly, but do the same ideas apply to malt and hops? The short answer is yes. Essentially by buying things that are organic, you are supporting an ideology that is committed to seeing less chemicals being absorbed into the earth.

Granted, organic beers aren’t perfect. As it currently stands, a beer can be certified organic as long as 95% of the ingredients used to make it are organic. Because of this, many breweries will use non-organic hops in a certified organic beer. Seems a little strange doesn’t it? Others felt similarly. Thanks to legislative efforts, by 2013 all organic beers must contain organic hops. Let’s hope that doesn’t impact the smaller organic brewers too heavily.

Now even homebrew shops are selling organic beer ingredients. Take for example Rebel Brewer, an online homebrew store based out of Tennessee. Organic 2-row malt goes for $1.55 per pound versus $1.19 for regular 2-row, a pretty nominal difference. The only lingering question I have about conventional malt is: If one boils the sugars extracted from the grain before fermenting, is that enough to kill off any pesticides that were used in the growing process?

Either way, I expect the amount of organic beers produced to increase with great successes from large breweries like Sierra Nevada and smaller ones like Bison Brewing. And I will welcome that by buying and drinking all the organic beer I can get my hands on.

Here’s to a greener brew.

Oktoberfest Beers

Today's photo comes to us from Daryl Meek aka Hepcat75 and is entitled "OktobHERfest". Here's the caption Daryl included:
The problem with finding good beers, is that she is now finding them too.

And she's drinking all my beer!!!!

Both of these are good ones, too. The Harpoon is particularly smooth...and dangerous. And look at that color! A nice, rich, red brew...it definitely did not disappoint.

You can check out Daryl's photos on his website digitalartscape.com.

Natty Greene's Buckshot Amber

Continuing the theme of missing Summer, today's photo features a beer called Buckshot Amber out of North Carolina brewery Natty Greene's, submitted to us by Nick Puglisi. Here's Nick's description of his submission:
I took this picture while sitting on the back deck looking at the ocean in Kill Devil Hills, NC on my last night of vacation this past week. A few shingles and a little bit of siding missing from some of the houses, but the Hurricane didn't make OBX any less pretty than it always has been. Buckshot Amber is an NC beer from Natty Greene's Brewery.
Thanks Nick for the photo! Check out Nick's blog Beer Trails.

Dogfish Head Faithfull Ale Release at Blue Palms Brewhouse in L.A.

Dogfish Head Faithfull Ale and Bitches Brew

Last night in Los Angeles, Blue Palms Brewhouse celebrated the release of Dogfish Head's newest beer, Faithfull Ale. Here's the brewery's description:
Faithfull Ale is a celebration of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary as a band and its extraordinary debut album, "Ten." In recognition of these milestones, this Belgian-style golden ale is delicately hopped to 20 IBUs and fruit-forward from 10 incremental additions of black currants over a one-hour boil. Faithfull will clock in at 7% ABV.
Normally I stick to East Coast coverage save for the occasional beer trip but good friend Josh was able to be convinced to stop by and take some beertography of the event. I have yet to pick up a bottle of this newest release, but I'm hoping to do so soon.

It was a packed house at the Blue Palms Brewhouse, one of my favorite beer bars in L.A.

The Faithfull Ale kicked early on in the night.

Brooklyn Brewery AMA Bionda

This past Monday eve I was graciously invited to the Brooklyn Brewery to help them celebrate their newest release and latest collaboration, AMA Bionda.

Here's the official description from the Brewery:
Brewed by Amarcord Brewery in the small medieval town of Apecchio, Italy, AMA Bionda is a beer made specifically for the Italian dinner table. Designed by Brooklyn Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, this golden beer is born of aromatic malts, three types of hops, Italian Orange Blossom honey from Sicily, and water from springs that date to Roman times. Ama means “loves” in Italian, and AMA Bionda loves Italian food as much as we do. Join us in Brooklyn to celebrate this landmark collaboration and welcome AMA to the United States with much food, drink and revelry.

And boy did we have a chance to pair it with some fine Italian foods. This release party took on a bit of a different feel from other ones, as candles lit the displays of the new bottled beer and waiters ventured around the party with delicious hors d'oeuvres.like Italian meats and cheeses.

Its hard to describe this beer. It's on the lighter side with a tinge of orange citrus from the Orange Blossom honey, but it did seem like a great beer to have on the dinner table. I'm hoping to be able to pair this with a nice chicken and pasta dish when the bottles hit the shelves.

Brooklyn Brewery President Steve Hindy and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver each took their turn addressing the crowd about how much fun this collaboration was for them. Even Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz made an appearance.

Meatsticks!

The Oxford Companion to Beer

On top of Brooklyn Brewery's newest bottled adventure, Brewmaster Garrett Oliver recently released The Oxford Companion to Beer which is literally a complete encyclopedia of all things beer. This book is for anyone from the beer novice to the Certified Cicerone. You may remember my coverage of The Companion's release party in September, but I've only been able to get my hands on the book recently. Let me tell you, this is a must-have for any craft beer fan. What am I saying? If you're reading this, I'm willing to be you already have it.

As a compendium to the companion of the companion, I thought you might like this video of Garrett talking about the book:

If you want to see more of Garrett discussing beer in general, check this out.
