Brooklyn Brewery Beertography Contest

It's that time again! I'm proud to announce the next official Beertography Contest! If you've been following our Beertography of the Day series, then you already have an idea of what we're looking for. The twist here is that all of the entries must feature Brooklyn Brewery in order to be eligible. The brewery will select their top ten favorite entries, post them to their Facebook page and the public will decide the winner via the infamous Like button.

The photo that gets the most Likes on Facebook will receive a pack of Brooklyn Brewery swag! We will accept entries for this contest from today, Monday October 31st until 11:59pm on Sunday November 13th.

Happy Halloween! Who can guess what "device" is accompanying the Post Road?

So what are you waiting for? Get those cameras out and take some beertography of Brooklyn beers, the brewery's awesome Happy Hour (Fridays 6pm-11pm) or something else Brooklyn Brewery related!

2. All photo submissions must somehow feature Brooklyn Brewery in order to be considered. We're looking for a combination of most creative along with best photography here.
3. Winner will be determined by Likes on Brooklyn Brewery's Facebook Page.

Oktoberfest Beers

The problem with finding good beers, is that she is now finding them too.

Both of these are good ones, too. The Harpoon is particularly smooth...and dangerous. And look at that color! A nice, rich, red brew...it definitely did not disappoint.

Natty Greene's Buckshot Amber

Continuing the theme of missing Summer, today's photo features a beer called Buckshot Amber out of North Carolina brewery Natty Greene's, submitted to us by Nick Puglisi. Here's Nick's description of his submission:

I took this picture while sitting on the back deck looking at the ocean in Kill Devil Hills, NC on my last night of vacation this past week. A few shingles and a little bit of siding missing from some of the houses, but the Hurricane didn't make OBX any less pretty than it always has been. Buckshot Amber is an NC beer from Natty Greene's Brewery.

Dogfish Head Faithfull Ale Release at Blue Palms Brewhouse in L.A.

Dogfish Head Faithfull Ale and Bitches Brew

Last night in Los Angeles, Blue Palms Brewhouse celebrated the release of Dogfish Head's newest beer, Faithfull Ale. Here's the brewery's description:

Faithfull Ale is a celebration of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary as a band and its extraordinary debut album, "Ten." In recognition of these milestones, this Belgian-style golden ale is delicately hopped to 20 IBUs and fruit-forward from 10 incremental additions of black currants over a one-hour boil. Faithfull will clock in at 7% ABV.

Normally I stick to East Coast coverage save for the occasional beer trip but good friend Josh was able to be convinced to stop by and take some beertography of the event. I have yet to pick up a bottle of this newest release, but I'm hoping to do so soon.


It was a packed house at the Blue Palms Brewhouse, one of my favorite beer bars in L.A.

Brooklyn Brewery AMA Bionda

This past Monday eve I was graciously invited to the Brooklyn Brewery to help them celebrate their newest release and latest collaboration, AMA Bionda.



Here's the official description from the Brewery:

Brewed by Amarcord Brewery in the small medieval town of Apecchio, Italy, AMA Bionda is a beer made specifically for the Italian dinner table. Designed by Brooklyn Brewmaster Garrett Oliver, this golden beer is born of aromatic malts, three types of hops, Italian Orange Blossom honey from Sicily, and water from springs that date to Roman times. Ama means “loves” in Italian, and AMA Bionda loves Italian food as much as we do. Join us in Brooklyn to celebrate this landmark collaboration and welcome AMA to the United States with much food, drink and revelry.

And boy did we have a chance to pair it with some fine Italian foods. This release party took on a bit of a different feel from other ones, as candles lit the displays of the new bottled beer and waiters ventured around the party with delicious hors d'oeuvres.like Italian meats and cheeses.



Its hard to describe this beer. It's on the lighter side with a tinge of orange citrus from the Orange Blossom honey, but it did seem like a great beer to have on the dinner table. I'm hoping to be able to pair this with a nice chicken and pasta dish when the bottles hit the shelves.



Brooklyn Brewery President Steve Hindy and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver each took their turn addressing the crowd about how much fun this collaboration was for them. Even Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz made an appearance.

The Oxford Companion to Beer

On top of Brooklyn Brewery's newest bottled adventure, Brewmaster Garrett Oliver recently released The Oxford Companion to Beer which is literally a complete encyclopedia of all things beer. This book is for anyone from the beer novice to the Certified Cicerone. You may remember my coverage of The Companion's release party in September, but I've only been able to get my hands on the book recently. Let me tell you, this is a must-have for any craft beer fan. What am I saying? If you're reading this, I'm willing to be you already have it.

Russian River Pliny the Elder

Today's photo came from a user on the Beertography Facebook page named Joseph Povella. Joseph shared his photo of one of the best beers in the world, Russian River Pliny the Elder. On top of that, the pool in the background made me die a little thinking about how much I miss summer already. Pliny + pool = amazing Summer day.

Sun King Osiris Pale Ale

Today's photo features Sun King's Osiris Pale Ale submitted by Rodney McPhail. I've had the chance to check out some of the other offerings from Sun King (all in 16oz. tallboy cans)
and have consistently enjoyed them. I've heard a few rumors lately about extremely exciting stuff coming in can form from Sun King very soon. Have you ever heard of a barrel-aged beer in a can?

Barcade Philadelphia: Now Open!

There are now three (count 'em, 3) Barcades in existence. The original in Williamsburg, Brooklyn just celebrated its 7th Anniversary, Barcade Jersey City just opened its doors this past April and now we have Barcade Philadelphia located in the city's Fishtown section.





For those familiar with Barcade's other two locations, you'll certainly see some similarities upon entering the latest incarnation. One major difference here in Philly is the brickwork throughout the bar. It gives the place way more of a old-school feel to go along with the vintage arcade games.



It already feels like this place has been around forever and it's only been open two weeks.



Founders Breakfast Stout at 12pm on a Sunday? Sure!



One huge plus about this Barcade is its high-top seating. If you find your friends but there's not a seat for you, you can still chat at eye-level. It sounds silly but it makes a difference.



This is a shot looking from the game area back at the bar. the bar actually curves around as you can see, and the part in the foreground is where you pick up your food order. Nice little touch.



There are some amazing games here in Fishtown. I chose to play a little Double Dragon which I don't think I've ever seen in an arcade. Oh, and of course, every Barcade MUST have a Tapper.



Another unique part about the Philly location is the outdoor seating area. Nothing fancy, but a nice space to hang out and get some fresh air while drinking your beer.



There's also a small roped section for smoking.



Speaking of smoking, here's the good kind! Barcade Philly smokes their own sausages and bacon. I think I need to repeat that. Barcade Philly smokes their own sausages and bacon. It smelled AMAZING and if I hadn't come directly from brunch I would have definitely got some.

So there you have it! If you're ever in Philly, check it out. It took me exactly 90 minutes to drive between the Philly and Jersey City locations....hmm...who will be the first person to visit all 3 Barcades in 1 day?

New Belgium Ranger IPA

Today's featured photo is of New Belgium Ranger IPA, submitted by Jesse Land. Have you had this beer before? New Belgium is not distributed to NY/NJ, but I did get to have it doing a Pacific Northwest Road Trip last year and I rather enjoyed it. Here's Jesse's description of his submission:

This was shot in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in one of my parent's gardens. My Mom is a big gardener, and as I was walking around taking photos of her flowers one day this summer (with a beer, of course), I set the beer down to get to work with my camera and then realized the beer itself would probably make a decent shot. :) It was taken with a Nikon D7000.

Maui Big Swell IPA

Today's photo features a beautiful Hawaiian sunset along with a can of the great Big Swell IPA from Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina, Hawaii. This photo was submitted by Steve Gitlin, founder of the New Jersey based homebrew club the Brew World Order (BWO). Steve took this photo while vacationing in Hawaii, so its pretty amazing all around. I've had the opportunity to check out a few of the Maui beers before, and I've enjoyed them quite a bit. This also ends up being a timely post, as they just announced yesterday that they will now be distributing their beers throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Rogue Double Chocolate Stout

Today's photo features a glass of Rogue Double Chocolate Stout from Natasha Bahrs. This is one of the better Chocolate beers out there in my opinion (Southern Tier's Choklat is also great), so check it out if you haven't already. Look for the big red bottle.

Photos from the Inaugural Brooklyn Pour 2011

This past Saturday afternoon I was lucky enough to attend the first-ever Brooklyn Pour, held at Skylight One Hanson in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This was an all-around good time and I was happy to be a part of it.



The venue was in the former Williamsburg Savings Bank, which was a very cool place to hold a beer festival. Some of the logistics were a little wonky, but still such a uniquely historic place.


He'brew's brand-new Genesis 15:15 Barrel-Aged Barleywine was among my favorite beers at the festival.


A slight disappointment was how many breweries were pouring out of bottles. Extra points to breweries like Kelso and Wandering Star who brought jockey boxes. Tap > Bottles.

The vault of the bank also hosted additional beers and food. All in all it was a bit cramped everywhere you went, but it was still relatively easy to get any of the beers.

Hitachino Nipponia

Happy Friday everyone! Today's submission comes from Michael Gille and features Hitachino Nipponia out of Japan. If you've tried and liked Brooklyn's Sorachi Ace, then you should absolutely check this Belgian Pale Ale out. Sorachi Ace hops are native to Japan, so it only makes sense for a Japanese brewer to utilize them in their brews.
